Since a young age, I have always been drawn towards the Divine with regular visits to our local Temple in the area. I recall spending lots of time praying very hard that I pass my university exams, find a good job and continue my work in the field of human rights, my life long passion. And with the grace of the Divine I was fortunate to have received a scholarship from the US government to further my law studies at a prestigious law school in Washington DC. On my return to South Africa, my wishes were further fulfilled, when I was offered employment by the first democratic government of South Africa as a Legislative Drafter in 1994.

What I had not anticipated is what came a few years later. In 1999, I developed very strange symptoms in my body. Following many tests and eventually an MRI, doctors diagnosed me with a hyperactive pituitary gland that produces a tiny little micro adenoma in your brain(small little benign tumour in the brain). It was inoperable, given the size and location of it and the only treatment possible was tablets that made one feel awful. Overweight, imbalance of the hormones, migraines, exhaustion, taking a pill every day and annual medical tests became a way of life for me.

The Power of the Present

I was in dire need to do an Advance course but something or the other would keep coming up. I was praying to Gurudev for it and then Blessings came to me in many forms. I happened to get the opportunity, this Guru Purnima, in the form of Kamalashile Gurupoornima Special Advance course. Kamalashile is a tranquil, beautiful village with dense forests and amazing waterfalls located in Mangalore.

There is a very special incident that happened during the time before our course started. I, along with some course participants and our Teacher Justin, went to visit a nearby waterfall. I was not aware that we had to climb up the waterfall while it was still raining, hence I carried my spectacles along. While climbing up the waterfall, my spectacles fell down all the way from the top. Then there was no way I could have got them back.

He Called Me Adorable

In my unquenchable thirst for Knowledge, I decided to follow Sri Sri around for a while. I wanted to become whatever He was. I went wherever He went, laughed whenever He laughed, sat wherever He sat, and I just hung around Him. Maybe, I just might get IT! (Whatever "it" was.)

I followed Him to a retreat in Canada. It was beautiful, and about 200 people showed up. Some of the regular devotees had spent a lot of time with Him. I decided to be one of the in-crowd and began to follow Him around.

As I walked by, I saw a group of people sitting on a bench just outside His door. There was room for one more, so I sat down in silence. I closed my eyes and continued my silence. I opened my eyes just as He began putting sweets in everyone's waiting hands. As He walked by, He would occasionally call people by name.
"Oh, my God," I innocently thought. "He's actually going to give me a sweet. How wonderful!"

I held my hands open, cupped near my forehead, and sat patiently. When He approached where I was sitting, He stopped.

Beautiful Recovery

I came into the Art of Living family in December, 2006. My husband and I were keen on doing the Basic course much earlier, but somehow nothing worked out because of my mother’s old age and poor health condition. She had dementia, and no one was ready to take her responsibility during the period of the Basic course, when I would be away from home. So unfortunately, I could not experience the course then.
With the passage of time, performing the role of a caregiver to my mother took a toll on me. Slowly by slowly, I started to slip into depression. And soon, I was in a bad condition. I consulted a doctor who gave me anti depressant tablets, and it made my condition worse. After a week of medication, my husband felt that there was no improvement and therefore we decided to consult our family doctor, who was also treating my mother then. This doctor advised me to do the Basic course (AOL), which he said would do me good, rather than getting addicted to medicines. The same day, we telephoned the Ashram to inquire about the ongoing courses, and to my good luck, the course had started that very day. So the next day, I joined the course, along with my husband.

Nature Has it's Ways

Recently, I did an AMC at the Ashram. Normally Guruji gives Darshan to all the AMC participants at the end of the course. This time was no exception either. The Darshan went really well and I was really happy after meeting the Master. I met Guruji once more that week, and I felt that all my questions were answered. It’s such a state of bliss one feels on seeing Him, it’s truly unexplainable!
The following week, while working with the Ashram Events & Promotions team, news came that Guruji was going to meet people in the evening. One of my fellow Ashram sevak (volunteer) was the first one to know about it. He was really excited to meet Guruji, as this was his first time at the ashram. He asked me if I could accompany him in the evening at the Darshan queue. I was in two minds. It was only last week that I had met Guruji, and secondly there was a lot of pending work. But still I said a ‘yes’ to my friend, just to keep him motivated. Very soon our day's work was allotted and it turned out that my friend was supposed to visit the city at 4.30 pm, which was precisely the time when Guruji would meet the devotees. And I was given the responsibility of staying back in the Ashram and handling other matters. My friend was really heartbroken, and I felt very sad for him. I even suggested that we switch responsibilities, but that was not approved by our seniors. So we went ahead as per the plan.

My friend and some other sevaks had already left by 4.30 pm, and I was waiting at my Ashram office, as I was supposed to receive a few guests. Suddenly I got a call from my Senior, saying that I was required to deliver certain items to someone at Budhha Hall (above Vishalakshi Mantap) at 5.15 pm. My desire to meet Guruji that day was very sublime. I had this ego that I had already met Him a couple of times last week, and therefore meeting Him again was not so important, and hence I would not be missing much if I did not go for Darshan. Anyway there was a rule for Ashram sevaks to attend to their work first.

Faith Building

I was introduced to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar through my Sister in Law. She had done the Art of Living course long back, in the year 2000, and had Sri Sri's picture at our home. Like any other Guru or God /Goddess, we used to see His picture and pray to Him.

One day, my mother was in a grave dilemma, and she just prayed to Sri Sri and surrendered the matter to Him, and in reality, she got her answer within 30 minutes. Wow! Now that’s truly fast and amazing! Even Pizza delivery is not so fast :). From that day onwards, my mothers’ faith started growing, and now, she completely relies on Miracles by Sri Sri .

My faith in Him actually took 5 years to develop. Maybe there’s a right time for everything in life. Initially, I used to think that Sri Sri, like many other spiritual teachers, would teach about God and talk their stories, which I was not very inclined towards. But to my pleasant surprise, it was not so.

I once happened to pick up a book on Sri Sri's teachings, which my mother had bought, and after reading a couple of chapters from there, I felt that the knowledge He was sharing was extremely practical and could be applied on a day-on-day basis, be it at home, in relations, at work, anywhere.

I saw implementable solutions to many of my problems, therein. Slowly and steadily, my inclination towards Gurudev started building. I subscribed to His pages on Facebook, started reading Guru One Liners, shared all His knowledge with friends and family, starting watching His discourses, and finally I attended the Happiness Program. That was the biggest and best step that I had taken in a long time, as its fruits were truly sweet as honey!

The most significant possession that I attained on the course was gaining back my lost confidence.

It meant the world to me at that time, as it was something that I had been long looking for. And along with that, I learnt many lessons of life, learnt to be a good person, full of zeal and positivity.

Thanks a lot Guruji for giving me back the things that I was searching for since the last 10 years. I cannot write in words, how grateful I am to Him but I can definitely feel that emotion and surrender it at His Holy feet. I feel blessed to have such a Miraculous Master in my life.
